It looks like MacGyver is set to take on his last mission. It has been announced that the current fifth season of the popular rebooted series will be its last. CBS will end its five-season run with a series finale set to air on April 30, 2021.
It seems as if CBS is just looking to do new things with its schedule because there is no clear reason as to why MacGyver was canceled. The series has averaged a respectable 5.85 million viewers and a 0.7 in the coveted 18-49 demographic and that has been on Friday nights which is especially challenging to pull in viewers. MacGyver has opened CBS' Friday lineup at 8:00 PM since it began its run which is no easy task. The show has consistently been a solid opener for the likes of Hawaii Five-0/Magnum P.I. and Blue Bloods. Kelly Kahl, President of CBS Entertainment, had this to say about the show ending its run:
"All of us at CBS are extremely grateful for the incredible work and dedication from Lucas and the rest of the cast, as well as Monica, the writers and the entire crew. The MacGyver team traveled far and wide to repeatedly save the world with little more than bubble gum and a paper clip and made this show distinctly their own. We’re gratified we get to give this dedicated and loyal fan base the opportunity to say goodbye to their favorite characters in the thoughtful manner this series deserves."
MacGyver is a reboot of the popular 1985 series and it stars Lucas Till as Angus MacGyver, the ingenious title character and undercover government agent with strong engineering skills. The series currently also stars Tristin Mays, Justin Hires, Meredith Eaton, Levy Tran, and Henry Ian Cusick. George Eads, of CSI: Las Vegas fame, was an original co-lead on the show but he left during season 3 and his character was seemingly killed off. The current fifth season saw the show get a new showrunner named Monica Macer, who replaced the series' developer/executive producer/showrunner Peter Lenkov. He was let go following an investigation into allegations about a toxic environment on the show. Macer also had encouraging words for her time with the series as it comes to a close:
"Since coming on board to MacGyver last year, I have been amazed by the devotion and enthusiasm of this remarkable cast and crew, as well as the loyal fans. My gratitude goes out to Lucas, Tristin, Justin, Meredith, Levy, and Ian, who put everything they have into our show, specifically for the fans. We can’t wait for them to see our spectacular final episodes and the adventures that still await for Mac and the team at the Phoenix."
Are YOU sad to see MacGyver go? The series finale is set to air on April 30, 2021.
