The tenth season of the FX anthology series American Horror Story was almost ready to go into production when things were put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Episode scripts were written and a cast was assembled that includes Macaulay Culkin, Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Leslie Grossman, Billie Lourd, Adina Porter, Lily Rabe, Angelica Ross, and Finn Wittrock. But according to series co-creator Ryan Murphy, plans might have to change when the lockdown is over.
Speaking with The Wrap, Murphy said he might not be able to go forward with the season he had planned this year because
a lot of what I was going to shoot was dependent on a very specific moment, it was a weather-dependent show. So now I don’t know. I don't know what we’re going to do. I don't know what I'm gonna do next with that show. I don't know if I'll accelerate another season or wait till next year to shoot this one."
Personally, I'm hoping he'll just wait and go ahead with the season 10 that is already written, mainly so we can see what Murphy had planned for Culkin's character. Murphy told E Online that he wanted to bring Culkin onto the show because he has always been a fan of the actor and that "there's both a lightness and a darkness with Macaulay Culkin that I'm attracted to."
So, I have this very, very great insane part. And I asked to speak to him on the phone and he said OK. [When] I cast, I never let people read things, usually. I said, 'OK, here's the pitch.' And I told them the character and I told him he has crazy, erotic sex with Kathy Bates and does other things. And he paused and he goes, 'This sounds like the role I was born to play.' So, he signed up right then and there.
We're waiting for the crisis to be over because all those scripts are written and I'm excited for him to play that part. I'm excited for him to be in my world because I think… I'm gonna want to do a lot of things with him if he wants to work, because I think he's fascinating and interesting, and I think he has a soul."
Macaulay Culkin playing an "insane part" and having "crazy, erotic sex with Kathy Bates" sounds like something the world really needs to see.
FX has renewed American Horror Story through season 13, and Murphy has also announced that there will be a spin-off called American Horror Stories that will have contained episodes rather than stories that last an entire season.
