M. Night Shyamalan isn't exactly on anyone's must-see list in the wake of AFTER EARTH, THE LAST AIRBENDER and THE HAPPENING, but that doesn't mean the man hasn't stayed busy. Right now he's doing work on the TV show Wayward Pines, and this September will see the return of his low-budget film affair in THE VISIT. However, the question of whether or not he would return to the world of UNBREAKABLE still comes up, and it seems as though that's a project he hasn't completely written off yet.
Whether or not M. Shyamalan still considers doing an UNBREAKABLE sequel:
Yeah, I do sometimes. I love those characters and I love that world. Of course, the whole world makes comic book movies now. At the time, it was completely novel. I remember when I made it, Disney was literally like, “Comic books?! There’s no market for comic books!” That’s all they make now! It was a hilarious conversation. I remember it. I was like, “Maybe you’re right. Maybe nobody will come see comic book movies.” They were like, “Those are people in little conventions who like comic books.” And I was like, “But, I like comic books!” But the beauty of the world of Unbreakable is that you’re playing it for reality. It should never feel like a comic book movie. It feels like a straight-up drama. It’s real. You’re confronting the possibility that comic book characters were based on people that were real. That’s the premise, so the tone has to be super grounded. It would be cool.
Shyamalan delivered a hell of a hat trick with THE SIXTH SENSE, UNBREAKABLE and SIGNS. Now whether or not it has really been studios to get in his way or himself, the quality of his films have taken a dive. One thing's for certain: the man needs to step away from the big budgets for the time being and deliver the type of films he became known for. Hopefully his latest venture, THE VISIT, will be exactly that. And if he decides to make an UNBREAKABLE 2 some day, well, I wouldn't hate that idea.
THE VISIT is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2015.
Once again, please?!?
