As the release date approaches, it seems that literally every single day we have new news regarding writer/director M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming simultaneous sequel to UNBREAKABLE and SPLIT. Not that I'm complaining. After all, I already have my tickets bought and ready to roll to see the movie this Thursday night. So maybe I'm biased. All the same, guess what we have for you today? News on GLASS 2… kinda.
Basically, it seems that while Shyamalan COULD make a sequel to GLASS, it looks like he's not interested in doing so. The writer-director recently spoke to Vulture about all things M. Night and eventually, the conversation turned to GLASS PART II. And Shyamalan says that another entry in the Eastrail 177 series is not gonna happen.
Shyamalan on GLASS 2:
…That’s not interesting to me. There’s no danger in that. Or not enough danger, let’s say that. For me, my weapon isn’t matching pyrotechnics against pyrotechnics. I’m just not good at it! I just can’t — Avengers and movies like that — I mean, I don’t even know how they do these things.
He continues:
Yeah, we’re not doing that though. I have the sequel rights to most of my movies, essentially for the reason to not do them.
Not sure at this point in time if this is good or bad news. I guess I'll know once I have the chance to check out the movie on Thursday. But considering how opposed to sequels Shyamalan is, maybe it's best that we all just hold our tongues and not let him in on the fact that GLASS (and SPLIT for that matter) is a sequel in and of itself… but let's just keep that knowledge to ourselves. I guess he doesn't realize it yet.
Anyhow, make sure to hit us up and let us know how excited you are for GLASS! And while we're here, here's the official GLASS synopsis:
M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, and 2016’s Split—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.
Returning with Willis and Jackson from UNBREAKABLE is Spencer Treat Clark as Dunn's son and Charlayne Woodard as Price's mother. Back with McAvoy from SPLIT is Anya Taylor-Joy (THE WITCH). Sarah Paulson (AMERICAN HORROR STORY) joins the cast this time around as well. And if you're looking forward to witnessing all the UN-SPLIT-ABLE mayhem this January, then you might be interested to know that the film has scored a PG-13 rating via the powers that be over at the MPAA for "violence including some bloody images, thematic elements, and language."
Shyamalan produced GLASS with Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions, Ashwin Rajan, and Marc Bienstock. Steven Schneider, Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum, and Kevin Frakes served as executive producers. GLASS is scheduled to twist and turn its way into theatres on January 18, 2019.
