Admit it, if I were to tell you that M. Night Shyamalan’s multiple-personality thriller SPLIT was going to sit at the top of the box office charts for the 3 consecutive weeks, you would have called me a liar. However, along with several other surprises to the start of 2017, here we are. Could it be that M. Night is on the cusp of making a major comeback? Will the Hitchcockian-inspired director continue to deliver twists that will boggle the minds of theatergoers? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure, Mr. Shyamalan is feeling quite frisky after his recent success, as evidenced by this tweet from his account which was posted on February 4th, 2017.
Ah, way to be as cryptic as ever, Mr. Shyamalan. What do you all think this could mean? One would ponder that the enigmatic yet ofttimes predictable director is planning a direct sequel to the James McAvoy-led thriller SPLIT, however, those who’ve seen the film might suspect that he’s speaking in reference to one of his older film projects. Obviously, I’m not going to spoil anything here, but let’s just say that I’d be pretty jazzed to hear of a follow-up film to one of Shyamalan’s … sturdier cinematic endeavors.
What do you all make of this? Have you been to the cinema to check out SPLIT yet? Do you think M. Night still has the chops for creating worthwhile narratives or did his mystery-with-a-twist formula fizzle out for you long ago? While I must admit that I don’t find myself getting excited by anything Shyamalan-related, these days, history has proven that talented directors are more than capable of roaring back onto the scene with advantageous stories to tell and loose ends to wrap up. I mean, DEVIL was okay, I guess, and I’ve heard that THE VISIT was decent. I don’t know, though. After bombs like THE LAST AIRBENDER (hang your head in shame for this one, sir), THE HAPPENING, and AFTER EARTH, I’d have thought that M. Night’s time in the spotlight was retired. However, visionaries have pulled themselves from bigger fires in the past, so I say let’s give Mr. Shyamalan a chance to redeem himself and see if he’s got a few more ideas worth exploring in that sinister brain of his.
