M. Night Shyamalan confirms that he’s done with the Unbreakable universe

It's been nearly twenty years since audiences were introduced to David Dunn (Bruce Willis) and Mr. Glass (Samuel L. Jackson) in UNBREAKABLE, and, thanks to SPLIT serving as a stealthy sequel, we'll get to see David Dunn and Mr. Glass come face to face with Kevin Wendell Crumb (James McAvoy) in GLASS. Naturally, this has been billed as the long-awaited conclusion to the UNBREAKABLE trilogy, but some have wondered whether or not these characters could return in future.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, GLASS writer/director M. Night Shyamalan was quick to say that he's done with the UNBREAKABLE cinematic universe following the release of GLASS.

Yeah, I would say so. I have a lot of original stories I want to tell. I’m an original filmmaker and I want to keep on telling new stories and new characters. It’s fun for me to figure out a new language, and then learn it, and try to get an audience in two hours to learn, and accept it, and really find their way.

Despite the mixed reviews it's received, GLASS is still expected to make somewhere between $60 million and $75 million during the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. Quite impressive. M. Night Shyamalan said that he already has two more ideas for future projects, but since GLASS wrapped he's been working on his upcoming TV series for Apple. "[I can’t talk about it] too much yet," Shyamalan said of the series. "It’s a thriller, a half-hour thriller. When Apple launches their streaming network, our show will be one of their major shows, if not their launching show." Although he walked into GLASS expecting the worst, our own Chris Bumbray seemed to enjoy the film more than others. "While Shyamalan’s is no doubt an inconsistent director, GLASS is more hit than miss, despite the naysayers," Bumbray said in his review of the film. "Again, it’s not on the same level as his best work, but it’s also far, far better than his worst, and still a satisfying, if imperfect, follow-up to UNBREAKABLE."

M. Night Shyamalan brings together the narratives of two of his standout originals—2000’s Unbreakable, from Touchstone Pictures, and 2016’s Split, from Universal—in one explosive, all-new comic-book thriller: Glass. From Unbreakable, Bruce Willis returns as David Dunn as does Samuel L. Jackson as Elijah Price, known also by his pseudonym Mr. Glass. Joining from Split are James McAvoy, reprising his role as Kevin Wendell Crumb and the multiple identities who reside within, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Casey Cooke, the only captive to survive an encounter with The Beast. Following the conclusion of Split, Glass finds Dunn pursuing Crumb’s superhuman figure of The Beast in a series of escalating encounters, while the shadowy presence of Price emerges as an orchestrator who holds secrets critical to both men.

GLASS will hit theaters on January 18th.
