Lynne Ramsey, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Stephen King

We've seen more than a few adaptations of Stephen King stories over the decades, particularly in recent years, and the adaptation train will continue marching forward with "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon." It has now been announced that Lynne Ramsay, director of WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN and YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE, has been tapped to helm the adaptation of the psychological horror novel.

"The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" tells the story of Trisha McFarland, a young girl who gets lost while hiking in the woods and winds up wandering further and further from civilization. Exhausted and dehydrated, Trisha begins to hallucinate that her hero, baseball player Tom Gordon, is there with her and may be the only defense against a supernatural beast that has been stalking her through the woods. Sounds promising. Christy Hall, co-creator of Netflix's I'm Not Okay With This, has co-written the script with Lynne Ramsay. The project was once slated to be written and directed by George A. Romero in the early 2000s, but those plans later stalled. Christine Romero, the former wife of the late great George A. Romero, is still on board the project and will be producing alongside Roy Lee, Ryan Silbert, and Jon Berg. Production on THE GIRL WHO LOVED TOM GORDON is expected to kick off sometime next year.

A synopsis for "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon" via Amazon:

On a six-mile hike on the Maine-New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail, nine-year-old Trisha McFarland quickly tires of the constant bickering between her older brother, Pete, and her recently divorced mother. But when she wanders off by herself, and then tries to catch up by attempting a shortcut, she becomes lost in a wilderness maze full of peril and terror. As night falls, Trisha has only her ingenuity as a defense against the elements, and only her courage and faith to withstand her mounting fears. For solace she tunes her Walkman to broadcasts of Boston Red Sox baseball games and follows the gritty performances of her hero, relief pitcher Tom Gordon. And when her radio's reception begins to fade, Trisha imagines that Tom Gordon is with her — protecting her from an all-too-real enemy who has left a trail of slaughtered animals and mangled trees in the dense, dark woods….

THE GIRL WHO LOVED TOM GORDON will be Lynne Ramsay's first feature-film since the release of YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE back in 2017. The brutal thriller starred Joaquin Phoenix as a traumatized hired gun who is tasked with finding and rescuing the daughter of a politician who has been kidnapped by a human trafficking group.
