Luther: The Fallen Sun: Idris Elba returns in a feature film continuation of his television series

Idris Elba returns to his popular television character, John Luther, who we hadn’t seen since 2019’s finale of the series Luther. When we last left him, Luther was being placed under arrest by Schenk, played by Dermot Crowley. Fear not, fans of the show! There is a feature continuation set to premiere on Netflix titled Luther: The Fallen Son. And it will be brought to us by Jamie Payne and series creator-writer Neil Cross.

The official synopsis reads,

“In Luther: The Fallen Sun — an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga reimagined for film — a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary. The film also stars Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley, who returns as Martin Schenk.”

Elba fills us in on the state of his character, “He’s done so much to bend the law in order to catch the bad guys that he’s ended up in jail. So that’s where we start the story. He’s contemplating what he’s going to do with his life.” After Elba concluded the show, the Brit would keep busy by appearing in such movies as Fast & Furious presents: Hobb & Shaw, The Harder They Fall, and even a little cameo reprising his Marvel role in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Luther: The Fallen Son will be executive produced by Dan Finlay, Brendan Ferguson, Miki Emmerich, Kris Thykier, and Priscilla Parish. Joining them will be producers Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, David Ready, Neil Cross, and Idris Elba himself.

The director Jamie Payne says you don’t necessarily have to have seen the show to understand the movie, saying, “The story in some ways continues — if you binge the series from season one to the film, the story is continuous. But because the film has got such a larger platform, we thought it was important that if someone was watching the film for the first time that it had its own story. So you could watch the film and go back and then binge the series. It was important to all of us that the audience could find a way into the series, and to the lore.”

Luther: The Fallen Son is set to hit Netflix in March 2023.
