Luther movie: Andy Serkis & Cynthia Erivo join the cast oppossite Idris Elba

Since its debut more than a decade ago, Luther has spanned five seasons for a total of just twenty episodes. That’s not nearly enough, but fans have learned to treasure every bit. There have been rumblings of a Luther movie for quite some time but it’s finally moving forward. Idris Elba will obviously be reprising his role of Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, and THR has reported that Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo will be joining him.

The Luther movie has been scripted by series creator Neil Cross and will be directed by Jamie Payne, who directed the entirety of the most recent season, and production will kick off this November. As for who Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo will be playing in the Luther movie, it seems that Erivo will play a dectective who also happens to be Luther’s nemesis while Serkis will play the criminal villain of the film. If you’re not familiar, Idris Elba’s Luther is a dedicated and obsessive police officer who often finds himself becoming consumed by the darkness of the crimes he deals with.

Cynthia Erivo was recently seen starring alongside Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley in Chaos Walking as well as playing Aretha Franklin in the third season of National Geographic’s Genius series. She’s also set to play the Blue Fairy in Disney’s live-action adapation of Pinocchio directed by Robert Zemeckis. As for Andy Serkis, he will next be seen playing Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves’ The Batman on March 4, 2022, but he also directed Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which is set to hit theaters on October 1, 2021.
