We've got great news for all you sinners out there! Merrin Dungey (Alias, Big Little Lies, The FIx) and Brianna Hildebrand (Deadpool, Trinkets, Runt) are joining the cast of Lucifer for its sixth and final season.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Dungey will play Sonya, "a no-nonsense uniform cop who forms an unlikely bond with Amenadiel (DB Woodside)." Meanwhile, Hildebrand, who made a splash as the attitudinal Negasonic Teenage Warhead in Marvel and Fox's Deadpool franchise, will play Rory, "a rebellious, angsty, and ready-to-start-some-trouble angel" hoping to follow in original rebel Lucifer's (Tom Ellis) footsteps. Woe, she'll eventually "realize Lucifer isn’t exactly the devilish big bro she hoped he’d be."
Alas, it's going to be a hot minute until we meet these new characters on account of the fact that the second half of Lucifer's fifth season has yet to rise from the flames. While normal circumstances would have seen the entire fifth season unleashed upon the world by now, the coronavirus pandemic threw the devilishly-clever crime series one hell of a curveball earlier this year. When the show does make its return, fans will discover what transpires after God (Dennis Haysbert) comes down from Heaven to intervene in a battle between Lucifer, Amenadiel, and Michael (Ellis).
"It takes him back to a very primal place, and his feelings are very raw," Ellis told EW back in August. "I'm just so happy and so proud of what we've done. The first two episodes of the second half of season 5 are my two favorite episodes of the season, without a doubt."
The first eight episodes of Lucifer season 5 are available on Netflix now, with plans to unleash the second half of the season sometime next year. Oh, but don't let the show's mysterious return get you down, because season 6 is already in production. In other words, while it might take some time for season 5 to finish, it might not be that long until we're treated to the show's grand finale.
