Get used to hearing about every little thing Kathleen Kennedy has to say on the promotional trail leading up to the release of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS next week. As the head of Lucasfilm, everyone is hanging on her every word, hoping she’ll say something of real substance that then becomes a story worth paying attention.
Thanks to Slashfilm, we may have come up with something.
While discussing with her all things STAR WARS, the topic of the STAR WARS live-action television series and the shelved STAR WARS 1313 video game came up, with Peter Sciretta inquiring as to how dead and buried those ideas are in the Lucasfilm vaults. Surely they must be deep down there with the masters of the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, right?
Au contraire mon frère.
No. No, interestingly enough, thats an area we’ve spent a lot of time, reading through the material that he developed is something we very much would like to explore. And there was 1313 the game… So our attitude is, we don’t want to throw any of that stuff away. It’s gold. And it’s something we’re spending a lot of time looking at, pouring through, discussing, and we may very well develop those things further. We definitely want to.
Could that mean the idea of a STAR WARS underworld-type show could be resurrected again? Might they repackage some of those ideas as something else, be it another film or a different game or something else? Remember… everything is canon these days, so they have to make sure whatever they decide to greenlight fits into the larger shared universe/galaxy they’re building.
I wouldn’t expect it to be revived as is, given they will have George Lucas‘ fingerprints all over them, and I’m not sure that matches well with the new direction STAR WARS is taking. However, is there gold to be mined somewhere from all of it that can be useful one day in creating something new? I’d bet cold, hard cash on it. Now it’s just about finding those hidden gems.
