Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria will be less of a remake and more of an homage

Fans of Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA weren't exactly pleased to learn that a remake of the psychedelic horror film was being considered, but with production on the Luca Guadagnino directed remake wrapping up earlier this year, it's just something we're going to have to accept. However, Luca Guadagnino (CALL ME BY YOUR NAME) told The Guardian that he's considering his take on SUSPIRIA more of an homage rather than a straight up remake.

Every movie I make is a step inside my teenage dreams, and Suspiria is the most remarkably precise teenage megalomaniac dream I could have had. I saw the poster when I was 11 and then I saw the film when I was 14, and it hit me hard. I immediately started to dream about making my own version of it. So in a way it makes me smile when I hear people say, “How dare you remake Suspiria. Typical commerce-driven mentality.” I was just a boy who had seen a movie that made him what he became. So that’s how I am approaching it: a homage to the incredible, powerful emotion I felt when I saw it.

Luca Guadagnino added that it's strange that remaking a film is seen as a negative thing, where in the world of theater or opera, new reimaginings are celebrated. "Do you stop watching Tristan und Isolde’s mise-en-scène because Patrice Chéreau’s was so incredible? No, there will be a new one that will be fantastic," Guadagnino said. "How many Hamlets have we experienced in our lifetimes that were fantastic? Human art is not about inventing originality, it’s about finding a new point of view." It's expected that the basic plot will remain similar, with a young ballet dancer traveling to a prestigious dance academy in Europe, only to discover it is a front for something far more sinister and supernatural amidst a series of increasingly grisly murders, but hopefully Guadagnino's reimagining will prove its worth.

SUSPIRIA stars Dakota Johnson (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY), Chloë Grace Moretz (THE EQUALIZER), and Tilda Swinton (DOCTOR STRANGE), with original SUSPIRIA star Jessica Harper also making an appearance as a new character. SUSPIRIA doesn't have an official release date just yet, but it's expected to debut in 2018.
