On Monday, we reported that filmmaker Luc Besson is prepping a sequel to LUCY, his 2014 sci-fi action film starring Scarlett Johansson as a woman who's evolved far beyond our own human logic. Fans of the film were genuinely excited about the news, that was until yesterday when Besson took to his personal Instagram account to refute reports of a LUCY sequel being in the works.
You can see the post for yourself below:
We've run the post through a translator and have transcribed the text into English from its original French to the best of our ability:
Dear Journalists,
You are doing a formidable, noble and useful job. You investigate, cross the information, then you intersect it so that the truth, of which you are the spokesperson, can be heard. What an honor for you to inform, to prevent, to guide, to decipher even … But that was before. Before the Internet and your unrestrained and silly race to scoop. It does not matter if the info is right or wrong when we are the first to say anything. To the devil checks ethics or morals. Let us take up a foreign article and let us content ourselves with translating it, without perspective, without discernment. When did you lose that faith? When did you drop?
We may make movies that do not please you but we apply, often for years, to serve our love and our faith. Please try to regain your dignity, your nobility, your courage. We need you more than ever in these difficult times. Get back from the height. Respect you. For info: no I do not prepare Lucy 2. Neither yesterday nor tomorrow. Yet this fake News has been around the world thanks to you …. You will say to me: "It is not very serious". It is true, you are right … but it is "false" and normally this word should not be part of your vocabulary, because if we can no longer believe you, how do we preserve democracy? Our freedom depends on your integrity.
Besson's passionate outburst comes on the heels of Tyrese Gibson also taking to the same social media network to lash out against his Fast & Furious co-star, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, for being the reason that there won't be another main-line Fast film until April 10, 2020. Shortly after Tyrese's post went viral, it was announced that a Fast spinoff film featuring both Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham was in the works and is planned for a 2019 release.
Obviously, Besson's words place a mighty large nail in the notion that he had penned a LUCY sequel. Of course, this doesn't mean that plans for another film in the series won't happen, though I don't recommend holding your breath for an official announcement anytime soon. While we're waiting for the smoke to clear from Besson's ears, you can catch Scarlett Johansson when she makes her return to the Marvel Universe as Black Widow for AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR opening in theaters on April 28, 2018.
