The first season of the HBO series Lovecraft Country (pre-rder the DVD/Blu-ray HERE) was based on a 2016 novel written by Matt Ruff (you can buy that at THIS LINK), and apparently that first season burned through the entirety of the source material. If there's going to be a second season, the writers are going to have to go off-book – and HBO's Casey Bloys has confirmed that's exactly what showrunner Misha Green and her writing team are doing right now.
Bloys said Green and her collaborators are
coming up with a take. She had a book to go on in the first season, she and the writers wanted to go off and take some time to go out and figure out without a book with these characters, what’s the journey we want to go on. We all want to be sure she’s got a story to tell. That’s where she is right now, working on those ideas. I’m very hopeful, as is Mischa, so we’re giving them the time to work."
Green might not have a lot more time to dedicate to Lovecraft Country season 2, because she recently signed on to write and direct the next Tomb Raider movie starring Alicia Vikander. Hopefully she and the writers will be able to get a good idea together before she has to focus on the adventures of Lara Croft.
Last year, Green told Deadline,
I envision a second season that carries on the spirit of Matt Ruff’s novel by continuing to reclaim the genre storytelling space that people of color have typically been left out of."
The first season was all about what happens when
Atticus Black joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. Thus begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
Atticus, Letitia, and Uncle George are played by Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett, and Courtney B. Vance. They were joined in the cast by Aunjanue Ellis as George's wife Hippolyta; Wunmi Mosaku as Letitia's less successful hustler sister Ruby; Jamie Harris as country sheriff Eunice Hunt; Michael Kenneth Williams as Atticus's missing father, Montrose Freeman; Erica Tazel as Montrose's spitfire wife Dora; Jamie Chung as nursing student Ji-Ah; Jamie Neumann as Hillary, an outdoorsy woman whose dreams turn into nightmares in the big city; Mac Brandt as corrupt Chicago cop Lancaster; Abbey Lee (replacing the originally announced Elizabeth Debicki) as Christina Braithwhite, "the only daughter of Samuel Braithwhite, the leader of a secret order calling themselves the Sons of Adam"; Tony Goldwyn as Samuel Braithwhite, "patriarch of his family, who views people as assets and objects and outsiders — including his daughter Christina — as inferiors"; and Jordan Patrick Smith as Christina's henchman William.
Produced by Monkeypaw Productions and Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television Studios, Lovecraft Country counts Green, Jordan Peele, J.J. Abrams, Bill Carraro, David Knoller, Ben Stephenson, and pilot director Yann Demange as its executive producers.
HBO hasn't officially renewed the show for a second season yet, but they're "hopeful" it's all going to work out.
