On April 15, 2013, two homemade bombs detonated 12 seconds and 210 yards (190 m) apart at 2:49 p.m., near the finish line of the annual Boston Marathon, killing three people and injuring several hundred others, including 16 who lost limbs. The attack was a tragedy to be sure, and one that shook the very foundation of Boston and its community to its core. In the years following the incident, security for public events such as marathons (as well as other sporting events) has increased exponentially, as those who participate in the activity soldier on, but are never truly rid of the fear that something terrible might occur.
