Lose your appetite with the creepy trailer for We Are What We Are

The Sundance and Cannes film WE ARE WHAT WE ARE does not shy away from the fact that it is about a family of cannibals. Before you cry “spoiler” you can go no further than the image in this trailer of the words “Kuru disease” which is attributed to cannibals in Papua New Guinea. Aside from that, this atmospheric thriller looks to share more in common with the classic TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE than it does with recent torture porn movies.

Director Jim Mickle filmed this remake of the recent Spanish-language SOMOS LO QUE HAY stars Ambyr Childers and Julia Garner as sisters forced to continue their family’s gruesome tradition following the death of their mother.

The trailer touts a dark secret and a twist ending, which are staples of horror movies these days, but I have the sneaking suspicion that there is a heck of a lot more going on here, including top notch acting. The cast also includes Michael Parks, Kelly McGillis, Nick Damici, Wyatt Russell, and Jack Gore. Everything about this indie looks good and the cinematography appears top notch. I am definitely interested in seeing what this is all about.

WE ARE WHAT WE ARE opens on September 27th.
