One of the biggest winners at this year’s Comic-Con has, without a doubt, been Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. I think fans, by and large, were wary of the show, but the trailer they showed, along with some choice clips that haven’t been released yet, teased a genuinely epic addition to the franchise. As the gap between film and tv continues to narrow, The Rings of Power has a real shot at pushing the medium, with Prime boldly declaring the show is set to run five seasons, with it designed as a fifty-hour saga. No more – no less.
As part of the fun at Comic-Con, we were invited to join the press line and speak to the fantastic cast. I got to talk with a ton of folks, including Benjamin Walker (High King Gil-galad), who put an Elvish curse on me (what did I do???), Dylan Smith (Largo Brandyfoot), Leon Wadham (Kemen), the lovely Markella Kavenagh (Nori Brandyfoot), Owain Arthur (Prince Durin IV) and Trystan Gravelle (Pharazon) who sung for me in Welsh and the jaw-dropping Nazanin Boniadi (Bronwyn). Everyone involved seemed exceedingly proud of this massive undertaking, which has been in production (in some form or another) since 2018. The most expensive show Prime Video’s ever tackled, this may well be a game changer both for the service and the franchise.
