It may be close to twenty years since The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was first released, but watching Peter Jackson's trilogy still stands as my favourite theatrical experience; the midnight screenings packed with passionate fans eager to be immersed in Middle-Earth time and time again, there wasn't anything quite like it. Over the years, I've had my own Lord of the Rings marathons to recapture a little of that magic, first on DVD and then on Blu-ray, and with the trilogy recently being released on 4K Ultra HD, I think I've got another one in my future.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy, consisting of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, as well as The Hobbit trilogy, consisting of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, was released on 4K Ultra HD today, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment have released a short behind-the-scenes video of director Peter Jackson explaining the remastering process and the difficulties they ran into along the way. You can check that out above! Each trilogy includes both the theatrical and extended versions of the films, but if you're a hardcore fan, you'll probably want to hold out for the Middle-Earth Ultimate Collector's Edition that is slated to be released in the summer of 2021. In addition to the theatrical and extended editions of each film, the set will also include Blu-ray discs of The Hobbit trilogy, remastered Blu-ray discs of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as new bonus content.
