Long Shot trailer finds Rogen, Theron in a reverse Pretty Woman

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Much like Katherine Heigl and Seth Rogen in KNOCKED UP, Charlize Theron and Rogen don’t seem like an obvious match on paper, but in the new movie LONG SHOT (formerly known as FLARSKY) the two will form an unlikely romantic bond. The first trailer is here to tease Rogen and Theron’s budding romance, wherein Rogen plays Fred Flarsky, a journalist hired as a speechwriter for Theron’s Secretary of State, Charlotte Field, whom he was once crushing over when she was his babysitter.

As O’Shea Jackson Jr. says in the trailer, this plays like a reverse PRETTY WOMAN, wherein Rogen is a bearded, more over-the-top, crasser Julia Roberts, while Theron is the elegant, more charming version of Richard Gere. While there is a bit of a dynamic shift and some political content, this looks like your typical romantic comedy wherein two people who don’t look like they should be together get together in the end, with some moments of partying and pot smoking thrown in for that dash of Rogen flair.

The trailer debuted on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show this morning, where Rogen said he had been wanting to make the movie with Theron for years, always finding her funny during interviews but noticing that in movies she was “just murdering people for the most part.” He wanted to put her in a movie like this to show the world “the non-murder-y” side of the Oscar winner.

Based on a Black List script by Dan Sterling from 2012, the movie has been in some stage of development for years before Jonathan Levine (50/50) was hired to direct. Sterling’s script received from additions from Rogen, Theron and Liz Hannah (THE POST), with the rest of the supporting cast fleshed out by Bob Odenkirk, Alexander Skarsgard, Randall Park, June Diane Raphael and Andy Serkis.

LONG SHOT is in theaters May 3.
