With The Falcon and the Winter Soldier set to conclude next week, Marvel's next Disney+ series that will have everyone gathered around the virtual water-cooler each Friday will be Loki. The six-episode series will follow the Loki who stole the Tesseract during the events of Avengers: Endgame as he's imprisoned by the Time Variance Authority and forced to help them fix damaged timelines throughout human history. As this is Loki we're talking about, we can naturally expect plenty of twists and turns and shape-shifting back-stabbing.
While speaking with Empire, Tom Hiddleston teased that the upcoming Loki series will go a long way to exploring the character's ever-changing identity, pointing to the show's shifting logo as a big clue.
I want to preserve the freshness of the show for when it emerges, but something to think about is the [show’s] logo, which seems to refresh and restore. The font of how Loki is spelled out seems to keep changing shape. Loki is the quintessential shapeshifter. His mercurial nature is that you don’t know whether, across the MCU, he’s a hero or a villain or an anti-hero. You don’t know whether you can trust him. He literally and physically changes shape into an Asgardian guard, or into Captain America repeatedly. Thor talks about how he could change into a snake.
Hiddleston continued: "I think that shapeshifting logo might give you an idea that Loki, the show, is about identity, and about integrating the disparate fragments of the many selves that he can be, and perhaps the many selves that we are. I thought it was very exciting because I’ve always found Loki a very complex construct. Who is this character who can wear so many masks, and changes shape, and seems to change his external feeling on a sixpence?" As some fans have theorized that we might see more than a few alternate versions of Loki in the series, that "many selves" comment might be a bigger tease than we think. In addition to Tom Hiddleston, Loki also stars Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Richard E. Grant, Wunmi Mosaku, Sasha Lane, and Erika Coleman. The series will debut on Disney+ on June 11, 2021.
