Locke and Key left searching for new home after Hulu passes on pilot

Fans of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez's Locke and Key comic-book series have been dealt another blow today as Hulu has decided to pass on the pilot they themselves ordered last year. Directed by Andy Muschietti (IT) from a script by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Joe Hill, the horror/fantasy series revolves around three siblings who move into their ancestral home after the gruesome murder of their father and find that the house has magical keys which give them a variety of powers, but little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys and will stop at nothing to acquire them.

When the pilot was presented to Hulu executives, several were apparently keen to pick up the drama, but new Hulu CEO Randy Freer didn't care for it, especially after Hulu had paid to keep the writers' room open long after work was completed on the pilot. Seven scripts had already been completed, but all that work may not be in vain as THR says that WME, which represents Cuse, Muschietti, and Locke and Key publisher IDW Entertainment, have begun to hold screenings in an effort to find a new home for the series. Locke and Key co-star Samantha Mathis recently noted that the pilot was being shopped to "Amazon, Netflix and everyone right now." Here's hoping someone picks them up as it'd be a shame if this went down as another failed adaptation in Locke and Key's history.

There have been several attempts at adapting Locke and Key before, including a pilot for Fox in 2011 which starred Miranda Otto, Sarah Bolger, and Nick Stahl, and a feature-film for Universal Pictures. Neither adaptation succeeded, so let's keep our fingers crossed that we won't be adding another entry to that list.
