Hollywood has been trying to get a live-action Voltron movie off the ground for quite some time. It would seem that they’re about to take another crack at it as THR has reported that a bidding war has erupted over a Voltron movie set to be directed and co-written by Rawson Marshall Thurber.
The Red Notice director came up with the story for the Voltron movie and will co-write the script alongside Ellen Shanman. A variety of studios and streaming services are in the running for the project, including Warner Bros., Universal, and Amazon. THR says that Netflix isn’t in the mix which is surprising considering that they stream the animated Voltron: Legendary Defender series and Thurber is also developing the Red Notice sequels for them. The basic premise of Voltron is centered around five young pilots whose vehicles join together to form the mega mech known as Voltron.
There doesn’t seem to be a front-runner for the Voltron project at this time, but sources have told THR that a deal could be reached by the end of the weekend. Although that seems speedy, there’s no guarantee that this would be Thurber’s next project. I mentioned above that he’s got two Red Notice sequels in development for Netflix, which he’s planing on writing and shooting back-to-back. The first movie starred Dwayne Johnson as John Hartley, an FBI profiler who is forced to partner with the world’s greatest art thief (Ryan Reynolds) to track down the world’s most wanted art thief (Gal Gadot). The film didn’t receive the best reviews but it stands as Netflix’s biggest original movie of all time, so that spells sequel in just about any language. Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot are all set to return for the sequels. What are you hoping to see from the live-action Voltron movie?
