#1 – Infinity War
Infinity War will be the next Avengers film, but something tells me this is going to be very different than what Joss Whedon delivered with the first two movies. Bridging two films released a year apart with two heroes debuting in between, directors Joe and Anthony Russo have a lot to live up to, especially if this movie brings together practically every hero in the MCU. Could there be anything more anticipated than this?
#2 – Civil War
Next March, Phase 3 officially begins with a movie that already sounds as big in scope as an AVENGERS film. Dividing the MCU in half and forcing new heroes like Ant-Man and Spider-man to choose sides is going to be quite the spectacle. I am not sure how it can be contained in one movie, but something tells me that the Russos are going to do even more than they did with THE WINTER SOLDIER.
#3 – Strange Magic
While Scarlet Witch showcases some magic in AGE OF ULTRON, it was brought about thanks to alien technology. But, when Scott Derrickson’s DOCTOR STRANGE debuts, we will see a very different side of the MCU. With a cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, and possibly Rachel McAdams, DOCTOR STRANGE is going to bring us a very different side of superheroes.
#4 – Return of the Guardians
James Gunn has already told so much and yet so little about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 that it feels like it has already been filmed and waiting to be released. But, there is still a while before Star-lord and his crew of losers once again band together to defend the galaxy and regardless of what the story will be about we will be there to see it.
#5 – The Defenders!
Daredevil has kicked off Netflix’s batch of street level heroes with a bang and the promise of Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and now The Punisher, culminating in The Defenders should be the biggest event in television history. Like THE AVENGERS, The Defenders is going to shift what comic book properties are capable of doing and, hopefully, lead this small screen heroes to the big screen.
#6 – The Punisher
Season 2 of Daredevil is being billed as “Daredevil vs The Punisher”. Could Marvel be cooking up Marvel’s equivalent of BATMAN V SUPERMAN? The casting of Jon Bernthal caught many off guard but looks like a perfect fit for the MCU. I just hope the showrunners bring the same level of quality as the first season of Daredevil and take it up a notch.
#7 – Diversity
Marvel will give headline spots to both a woman and a black character, but Phase 3 is also the biggest group of films in the MCU to date. With four new heroes getting their own movies instead of more sequels featuring the original stars of Marvel films, the universe is going to become deeper than ever before.
#8 – Thor Versus The Apocalypse
Whether Thor survives the closing chapter of his trilogy is a mystery, but the subtitle RAGNAROK definitely indicates that a massive cataclysm is coming to Asgard. I have really grown to enjoy Chris Hemsworth’s performance and giving him such an epic send-off will be something to see.
#9 – Inhumans
The Kree/Human hybrid characters have already debuted on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but their true story will not be told until their own movie closes out Phase Three before the second half of INFINITY WAR. How they will fit into the overall MCU seems to have been already laid out on the small screen, but whether the movies will stick to that remains to be seen.
#10 – A Proper Take On Spider-man
We now know that Tom Holland is playing the latest version of Peter Parker. Being an actual teenager will bring something different to how Spider-man is portrayed on screen. We will get our first look in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, but the developing solo film at Sony should take the fan favorite character back to his classic roots of being a high school loser granted an extraordinary responsibility.
