Joseph Kosinski hit a home run when he selected Daft Punk to score TRON: LEGACY. The electronic duo has always had a sound that fit with the world of Tron and it was by far one of my favorite scores of the year. Now, he looks to do it again with M83 and OBLIVION. I have been a big fan of M83 for years now and getting the chance for those who have never heard Anthony Gonzalez’s tunes will find a new favorite musician.
The track is titled “StarWaves” and is everything a big science fiction score should be: bold, pulsating, and memorable. I am looking forward to hearing the entire soundtrack when it is released on April 9th.
Plot:
On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind. Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
OBLIVION is looking to be a really good time at the movies, but I wonder if the new trailers are giving too much away about the plot. The first trailer was perfectly designed to make you wonder what the hell was going on, but the most recent trailer makes it seem like it is going to have a cheap twist halfway through the middle. I hope I am completely wrong and that Kosinski is delivering one hell of a movie for us.
OBLIVION stars Tom Cruise, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Morgan Freeman, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and opens everywhere on April 12, 2013.
