The 1997 comedy Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion is one of those films that so-so box office at the time of its release but it has gone on to achieve cult status. Its growth in popularity over the years has sparked interest in a potential Romy & Michele sequel and now one of the film’s stars, Lisa Kudrow, is speaking on the possibility of one happening.
During a chat with People, Kudrow responded to a sequel to the film being made, which also co-starred Mira Sorvino. Kudrow expressed being interested in a sequel and also revealed that the film’s original writer, Robin Schiff, “has definitely been approached to start thinking of a sequel.” For Kudrow, it all comes down to the script and if that’s right, she says “Yeah, I think it could be fun.”
Kudrow and Sorvino recently reprised their characters from the film while presenting at the 2022 SAG Awards. The reunion made fans want the duo to do a proper sequel and Sorvino spoke on the possibility at the time:
“I know that Lisa and that Robin Schiff is interested in it. Maybe Alan [Cumming] is interested in it. I don’t know. I heard that maybe Janeane [Garofalo] is interested in it.”
The issue with a sequel getting made has to deal with rights. Disney would be the entity that has to deal with the property so they would ultimately have to be interested in making it happen. The fact that both actresses are game makes a sequel a possibility but we all know that a lot of time between films, in this case, 25 years, doesn’t always result in a great follow-up.
Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion was directed by David Mirkin and it revolves around two 28-year-old girls who appear to have not achieved much success in life. They decide to invent fake careers to impress castmates at their ten-year high school reunion and hilarity ensues. Made for $20 million, the film ultimately grossed $29.2 million at the domestic box office.
