J. A. Bayona's career was more or less kick-started by Guillermo del Toro, who produced THE ORPHANAGE. Well, now the tides have turned and Bayona has become his own del Toro. As he moves onto big Hollywood blockbusters (he will be helming the upcoming sequel to JURASSIC WORLD), he is also producing Spanish horror and giving a break to another deserving filmmaker: His frequent screenwriter Sergio G. Sanchez.
Sanchez's directorial debut, MARROWBONE, has certainly benefited from Bayona's presence. At Cannes, Lionsgate has already sold the property to over 50 international distributors. And that's before the film has even been completed!
MARROWBONE centers on
a young man and his four younger siblings plagued by a sinister presence in the sprawling manor where they live and have kept secret the death of their beloved mother in order to remain together.
Currently in pre-production, MARROWBONE is being produced by Belén Atienza, Álvaro Augustin, and Ghislain Barrois. The English-language film will shoot for ten weeks in Norhern Spain this June.
