Studios seem to love playing a lil' release date shuffle on Fridays, and this week finds Lionsgate pushing back the release dates of several of their upcoming films, including JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4, SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW, and THE HITMAN'S WIFE'S BODYGUARD.
JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 was slated to open on May 21, 2021, but has been pushed back to May 27, 2022, which means that we have a little over two years to wait before we get to experience Keanu Reeves handing out head-shots like candy once again. As for SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW, the franchise reimagining was set to hit theaters on May 15th, but will now take over JOHN WICK 4's old slot of May 21, 2021. THE HITMAN'S WIFE'S BODYGUARD, the sequel to THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD starring Samuel L. Jackson, Ryan Reynolds, and Salma Hayek, has also jumped forward a year, from August 20, 2020 to August 28, 2021.
The original release date for JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 also happened to be the exact day that Warner Bros.' plans to launch THE MATRIX 4 (unless that release is also delayed), which led to many fanboys falling asleep with dreams of dueling Keanu's in their heads. As production on THE MATRIX 4 was shut-down due to COVID-19, it will take priority when the shut-down is lifted and will likely shot for the remainder of the year, after which Reeves will move forward with JOHN WICK 4.
