Lionsgate may bring franchises Step Up, Red, and The Expendables to the small screen

Ah, just what we needed; more films turned into TV shows.

Apparantly, Lionsgate is discussing the possibility of turning some of its film franchises, to include the Bruce Willis comic-to-film series RED, the dance-rific STEP UP, and Sylvester Stallone’s all-star THE EXPENDABLES.

How they intend to do this and to what degree any of the original castmembers would be involved was not mentioned, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure that the majority of the stars in these films won’t be making the leap.  Perhaps some of the lesser-known actors that don’t have a thousand projects sitting on their plate could jump ship, but that doesn’t leave many.

Sadly, of all those franchies, STEP UP would probably be the easiest and most successful, due to the success of shows like Glee, American Idol, The Voice, So, You Think You Can Dance, etc.  I think RED and THE EXPENDABLES would be tougher sells, since those hinge largely on the cast.  I mean, do we really need a second-tier TV-14 version of THE EXPENDABLES?

I’m mostly against these ideas, but there’s always the possibliity that a miracle could happen and the right cast/crew/showrunner could be assigned to one of these projects that would knock my socks off, but the mere mention of them does nothing but inspire groans.

What do you say?  Would you tune in for these shows?

THE EXPENDABLES 2 opens on August 17, 2012, RED 2 is set to open on August 2, 2013, and STEP UP: REVOLUTION opens on July 27, 2012.
