Linklater exits Mr. Limpet; spiritual sequel to dazed and confused up next

Judging from the comments when I last talked about THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET, people didn't seem too happy to have a remake of the 1964 film in the works. Even with talent like Richard Linklater at the helm and a cast that included Josh Gad, Jon Hamm, Kevin Hart, Danny McBride, Sarah Silverman, Key & Peele and Zach Galifianakis. The remake was set to be a live-action/animated hybrid with the use rotoscope animation similar to his previous WAKING LIFE and A SCANNER DARKLY. Well, that may all be underwater now that Linklater is exiting the project.

THR reports that the filmmaker is exiting the project due to scheduling issues with his 1980s college film THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, which is a talked-about "spiritual sequel" to DAZED AND CONFUSED. The studio is apparently already looking to replace Linklater in hopes to keep the cast.

THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT is based on Linklater's own life experiences and revolves around freshmen navigating the first year of college life while trying to make the baseball team. This definitely sounds like a sequel of sorts to DAZED AND CONFUSED; first high school life now he will take on college life in the 80s. He wants to shoot the movie this fall; coming off the energy and acclaim of BOYHOOD that may not be a bad idea.
