Arnold Schwarzenegger promised he’d be back, and when it comes to the new TERMINATOR reboot he’s kept that promise. But he won’t be coming back alone, and a new report has confirmed that series original and the first Sarah Connor – Linda Hamilton – will come back with him for the new series of films.
THR got the exclusive that Hamilton will be returning alongside Arny for a new trilogy of films set to be helmed by DEADPOOL’S Tim Miller, taking place after the events of T2: JUDGEMENT DAY, with each movie being able to stand on its own while also forming an encompassing arc. This will be the first time she’s come back to play the iconic warrior woman since JUDGEMENT DAY, with GAME OF THRONES’ Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke playing the character in TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES and TERMINATOR GENISYS respectively.
Cameron spoke to Hamilton’s age (60), saying how men older than her like Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone refuse to hang up their bug guns, leading action movies in their old age, and how a woman should be able to do the same:
There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.
The new trilogy of movies will see the two vets return to the fold, but Cameron said they are currently looking for an “18-something woman” to be the centerpiece of the film, with the Schwarzenegger and Hamilton being the anchors. This is very similar to what Disney is doing with the new STAR WARS films, and Paramount has established a writer’s room to flesh it all out. Among the names involved are David Goyer (THE DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY), Charles Eglee (DARK ANGEL), Josh Friedman (THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES) and Justin Rhodes.
Seeing Hamilton return to her iconic role will be a welcome treat for TERMINATOR fans, but I can't help but smell the meal Paramount is trying to cook from 100 miles away. Clearly, this is their attempt to take a classic sci-fi franchise and capitalize on nostalgia, while also delivering something new. Disney has been doing it with STAR WARS for a few years now, and the goal seems to do the same with TERMINATOR. The series will have a hard time validating this new series, as it doesn't seem to lend itself to a great breadth of storytelling like WARS does. We will see when the movies come out, I guess, and perhaps Cameron and Miller can bring us something that can be worthy of the first two films.
