Liev Schreiber says the future of Ray Donovan is up to Showtime

Liev Schreiber is one of this generation's more understated actors. Possessing a unique gravitas and a distinct and captivating baritone voice, Schreiber has made a career in small roles, everything from SCREAM's Cotton Weary to SPOTLIGHT's Martin Baron. While not all of his roles have been hits (ahem..X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE) he's known for taking on interesting and sometimes sinister roles.

In 2013 he got the opportunity to headline his own show with Showtime's Ray Donovan. For the last seven seasons, Liev Schreiber has portrayed the titular character, a "fixer" for the rich and famous. Over the course of eighty-two epiosdes, Schreiber's character has bribed, threatened, and paid off anyone and everyone necessary to ensure a positive outcome for his clients. The show has been a hit with audiences and critics alike, and won Jon Voight a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

The finale to season seven just dropped this past Sunday and unfortunately for Ray Donovan fans that could be it for the popular drama. Gary Levine, Showtime's co-President of Entertainment recently revealed that the show is probably coming to an end saying, “I think Ray Donovan is nearing the end of its run. We always talked about seven or eight seasons. Nothing has been decided yet but it’s fair to say it is nearing the end.” While Levine's words aren't a definitive statement that the show is canceled, it's not exactly a ringing endorsement of renewal either.

So what's the future of Ray Donovan? Well according to a recent Instagram post by Schreiber, it's up to the fans and ultimately Showtime:

I know the big question on everyone’s mine is whether there will be a season 8. Truth is it’s in the networks hands. Was…was that really the crew dancing to "A Tribe Called Quest"? Did that actually just happen? Anyway, moving on.

When someone starts out a post with, "What an amazing journey it's been," that's usually a clear signal that something has ended or is about to end. Now obviously I can't speak for Showtime or Schreiber but if you read between the lines it sounds like Ray Donovan may be over. At the same time however I find it hard to believe that Showtime wouldn't give a prominent and successful drama like Ray Donovan a proper sendoff. Shameless for instance is getting a final season after a eleven years. If not a full season eight then perhaps a TV movie ala Deadwood?
