Liev Schreiber says he was approached to be in Logan

LOGAN is back in the news in a big way this week, with James Mangold confirming a black and white cut of the movie is going back into theaters. This will give lovers of the movie (*raises both hands*) a whole new way to experience the dramatic, emotional final act for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. But, the movie could’ve be very different from the beginning – regardless of color scheme – had one character from the past been included.

Actor Liev Schreiber, who played Sabretooth/Victor Creed in the opposite of LOGAN – X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE – sat down Variety to talk about his new movie, CHUCK. During the chat Schreiber opened up about a communication between Jackman, Mangold and himself about returning for the final film:

There was an invitation early on from Hugh [Jackman] and [director James Mangold] and I would have loved to work on it. It was very difficult given “Ray Donovan’s” schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story. I think it’s a terrific movie. I’m just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire.

Chances are they could’ve been approaching him for the role as some sort of villain, one that would require Logan to face the past. But, like Schreiber said, they went a different way entirely and clearly everything worked out fine. LOGAN currently stands as one of the best-reviewed superhero movies of all time, and has amassed over $600 million at the global box office.

Given how grounded and mature LOGAN is compared to ORIGINS, I can’t say I’m not interested to see how they would’ve used Sabretooth. Maybe like Logan he could be some broken-down bar hopper, living in a drunken stupor. Schreiber is a great actor and he could’ve brought intensity to the role that would’ve gone well against Jackman’s in LOGAN. We’ll never, ever know, but now you have one more things to occupy your mind with as the rent date inches closer and closer. You’re welcome.
