Over the weekend at SDCC Legendary announced plans for a new King Kong movie, and now Deadline is reporting the studio wants ATTACK THE BLOCK director Joe Cornish behind the camera for SKULL ISLAND. The site has learned Legendary has offered Cornish the directing job, however they don't know if he'll take it or not.
Joe Cornish hasn't directed a film since ATTACK THE BLOCK, but at one point Paramount was interested in him for STAR TREK 3, and his spy movie SECTION 6 starring Jack O'Connell is in pre-production. If Joe Cornish does take the SKULL ISLAND job, he'll be directing from a script by GODZILLA scribe Max Borenstein.
A King Kong prequel directed by Joe Cornish? Yeah, I'm a little more excited for the project now then I was when the film was first announced. Cornish should do an awesome job with SKULL ISLAND, although part of me would rather see him direct another original film. Do you think Joe Cornish will accept Legendary's offer to direct SKULL ISLAND?
SKULL ISLAND is scheduled to be released on November 4, 2016.
