Uh-oh. Looks like ALL YOU NEED IS KILL could be experiencing some troubles as Legendary has dropped out of co-financing the Tom Cruise sci-fi war vehicle with Warner Bros. Sources are citing creative and demographic differences:
“Legendary agreed to come on subject to terms. That meant subject to script, budget, and creative mandate, but then Legendary decided it doesn’t fit within their creative mandate or fanboy demographic and they didn’t really have the appetite for this. So they didn’t come to terms with Warner Bros.”
Despite the break, Legendary is supposedly still on good terms with the studio and collaborations on GODZILLA and PACIFIC RIM are continuing between the companies without hiccup. Warner, meanwhile, is denying the some less than surprising behind-the-scenes rumors that KILL director Doug Liman is going overbudget and star Tom Cruise is vying for his own vision of the film. (I imagine Cruise doesn’t drop that creepy smile when he’s ruling a set with an iron fist).
The flick isn’t moving into HEAVEN’S GATE or WATERWORLD territory, but negative rumors cause negative buzz and the fact Legendary is dropping what seems like an obvious slam dunk doesn’t bode well. Still, I’ll be in theaters March 14, 2014 to see ALL YOU NEED IS KILL. With a cast that includes Cruise, Emily Blunt (pictured below) and Bill Paxton, I can’t not be. Check out the synopsis of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel being adapted below (it reads like GEARS OF WAR meets GROUNDHOG DAY) and chime in with your own thoughts.
There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again…
When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji’s escape or to his final death?
