Despite frequent indications to the contrary, Guillermo del Toro promised us again and again that the sequel to PACIFIC RIM was very much alive and had not been shelved. Turns out that he was right all along as Deadline reported a somewhat surprising turn of events today which seem to suggest that the project is very much alive but that Guillermo del Toro won't be around to helm the picture.
The outlet reports that Legendary Pictures has set Steven S. DeKnight to direct the PACIFIC RIM sequel. DeKnight is probably most well known as the creator of the Spartacus series on Starz, but he's also worked on Smallville, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse, and served as show-runner on the first season of Netflix's Daredevil series. Guillermo del Toro will still be very much involved in the upcoming sequel and he took to Twitter to express his enthusiasm for the resurrection of PACIFIC RIM.
While it's a little disappointing that del Toro won't be taking the helm of the sequel, it's exciting that we can finally look forward to another cinematic Jaeger vs. Kaiju showdown. The PACIFIC RIM sequel was previously slated for a August 4, 2017 release but was then pulled by Universal who replaced it with PITCH PERFECT 3.
Are you happy that PACIFIC RIM 2 is back on the table, even without Guillermo del Toro?
