Legendary Pictures is plenty busy these days bringing giant monsters to life in films like KONG: SKULL ISLAND and PACIFIC RIM: MAELSTROM, but it looks like they're going to bring the epic in more ways than one. As Deadline reports, they've acquired the rights to Frank Herbert's sci-fi classic "Dune", for use in either in the film or TV medium.
The story follows that of a young man Paul Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of the desert planet Arrakis. As this planet is the only source of the most important and valuable substance in the universe, control of Arrakis is a coveted and dangerous undertaking. The story explores politics, religion, and the classic hero's tale set amidst a massive science-fiction backdrop. David Lynch tried his hand at adapting this material in the mid-80s, and then another adaptation came our way via the SyFy channel in the year 2000. There's been talk over the years of another film or series of films to take advantage of the source material, but nothing has ever come of it. Let's see what Legendary can pull together!
