Jack McCoy is back, baby! It’s been announced that Sam Waterston will reprise his role as Jack McCoy for NBC‘s Law & Order revival. Waterston recently inked a deal to return for the upcoming 21st season of Dick Wolf’s crowd-pleasing crime drama, which premieres on February 24. This announcement celebrates Waterston’s 17th season of Law & Order.
According to sources close to the deal, Waterston has signed a one-year contract for the reprisal. He joins Anthony Anderson, who is reprising his role as Detective Kevin Bernard.
“Very few casting announcements have ever given me this much pleasure,” Wolf explained. “Since day one, Sam has had perfect pitch when it comes to Jack McCoy as a character who both reflects and expands our ability to understand the law. He is the ultimate conscience of the show and I look forward to him emulating the career of New York District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, who served until he was 90. With both Sam and Anthony (Anderson) returning, it shows that the 21st season is merely a continuation of where we left off.”
NBC’s Law & Order revival will also feature fresh faces like Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice, Honest Thief), who plays an NYPD detective, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal), who stars as an Assistant District Attorney. Camryn Manheim (Ghost Whisperer) is also joining the cast as Lt. Kate Dixon, while Odelya Halevi (Good Trouble) is set to play Assistant District Attorney Samantha Maroun.
NBC’s Law & Order revival hails from creator Dick Wolf and writer-showrunner Rick Eid. What is essentially the 21st season of the time-honored series will once again be “the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.” How the new season will approach its subject matter in today’s climate remains to be seen, though I’m sure viewers will be ready with their hot takes.
Are you looking forward to the Law & Order revival? Would you believe that I’ve never seen a single episode of the series? Not even in passing. I admit that all the hype for this revival has me curious about what I’ve missed. Let us know if you’re excited for Sam Waterston to reprise his role as Jack McCoy in the comments section below.
