We have some interesting sequel news coming in as it has been announced that a follow-up to Law Abiding Citizen is in development from Village Roadshow and Rivulet Films, per Deadline.
Screenwriter Kurt Wimmer is returning to pen the script for the sequel while Gerard Butler and his G-Base partner Alan Siegel are on board as producers. The storyline is being kept extremely under wraps but one has to wonder where the story will go. In the first movie, assistant district attorney Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) pursues Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) who was a frustrated father that implements an elaborate and twisted plan to bring down the judicial system in Philadelphia after a plea bargain sets the man free that murdered his wife and daughter. SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN IT but Gerard Butler’s Clyde dies in the end so it’s highly doubtful he’ll be returning and given the fact it has been over ten years since the release of the first film, one has to wonder if Jamie Foxx would be interested in reprising his role as well.
Law Abiding Citizen was a moderate hit when it was released in 2009. Directed by F. Gary Gray, the film grossed $127.9 million globally on a $53 million budget. Critics didn’t love the film at 25% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes but moviegoers were certainly interested. More recently, the film became one of the top three most viewed movies on Netflix back in December. This current resurgence could be why a sequel is moving forward.
