Although Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be reprising their roles of Neo and Trinity in THE MATRIX 4, it seems that Morpheus won't be joining them. While speaking with New York Magazine recently, Laurence Fishburne confirmed that he won't be appearing in the fourth installment of the franchise as he wasn't asked to return.
"No. I have not been invited," Fishburne said. "Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it's great." Earlier in the interview, Fishburne commented that he wrote the play "Riff Raff" after he was replaced by Samuel L. Jackson in DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE. While it seems that the actor won't be reprising the role of Morpheus for THE MATRIX 4, there have been plenty of rumours about a younger version of the character having a part to play. In addition to Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, THE MATRIX 4 will also feature the return of Jada Pinkett Smith as Niobe, as well as new cast members Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra, Brian J. Smith, and more. Although Laurence Fishburne won't be back as Morpheus this time around, the actor acknowledged that the character will likely be the role he's most remembered for.
It is probably the role that I'll be best remembered for, which is great; it's not the only thing I'll be remembered for, which is better. What I get with him is I've got Darth Vader in this hand, and I've got Obi-Wan in that hand. I've got Bruce Lee, I've got Muhammad Ali shuffled in there, and I've got kung fu.
THE MATRIX 4 is slated to hit theaters on April 1, 2022.
