Laurence Fishburne not asked to join Matrix sequel!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

In an interview with New York Magazine, Laurence Fishburne confirmed that he won't be joining Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss in the upcoming MATRIX sequel from director Lana Wachowski. When asked why, he said simply:

I have not been invited. Maybe that will make me write another play. I wish them well. I hope it’s great.

He also only had nice things to say about one of his most famous roles:

It is probably the role that I’ll be best remembered for, which is great; it’s not the only thing I’ll be remembered for, which is better. What I get with him is I’ve got Darth Vader in this hand, and I’ve got Obi-Wan in that hand. I’ve got Bruce Lee, I’ve got Muhammad Ali shuffled in there, and I’ve got kung fu.

While this indeed a bit of a bummer (Morpheus was one of my favorite characters of the series), if it means we're going in a weird, interesting direction with the series – or that star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is playing a younger Morpheus – it could be forgiven. Only time will tell, of course.

Meanwhile, MATRIX 4 is currently scheduled to come out April 1st, 2022…but we'll keep you updated if there are changed.

So what do you guys think? Does this affect your excitement for the sequel? Either way, sound off below!
