Oh, the the delicate balance a remake/reboot has to strike. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't proposition. Fans don't want the exact same thing, because it can't possibly be as good as the original… but we don't want them to change anything, because then it's not the same thing. It's a giant Catch-22, which has only one answer – ignore everyone and just go out and make the thing your own however you can. Put your own stamp on it, and, if it's good, people will respond in kind.
For as much hate as Paul Feig's GHOSTBUSTERS has been getting, you can't say that he isn't at least trying to make this new version his own, beyond the make-up of the crew (which some will never let go of). The latest clip for the film shows that, as we are beyond just proton packs for the Ghostbusters to take down spirits and supernatural entities. There is some cool hi-tech gadgets and weaponry that any specter should learn to fear. Hell, I don't know when I'm ever going to get into hand-to-specter combat, but, if the situation ever presented itself, I know I'd rather have some of this gear at my disposal than have it not exist.
Good thing I don't high-five, so no one is in any potential danger. Self high-five for that… Oh, wait… Dammit!
GHOSTBUSTERS opens in theaters on July 15.
