Eiza González is getting ready to put up her dukes as she prepares to join the cast of La Máquina, Hulu‘s limited series that takes place inside the squared circle. González joins Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, who already star in the Spanish-speaking series. According to La Máquina’s official synopsis, the story follows an aging boxer (García Bernal) whose crafty manager (Luna) secures him one last shot at a title. But to make it to fight night, they must navigate a mysterious underworld force.
According to her character’s description, González will play Irasema, an aspiring sports journalist who approaches boxing as more of an art form. She’s the ex-wife of Esteban (García Bernal), who she still deeply cares for, and mother to their two children. She’s known Esteban and Andy (Luna) since they were teenagers.
González stars in various fan-favorite films, including Edgar Wright’s stylish heist film Baby Driver, Robert Rodriguez’s criminally underrated Alita: Battle Angel, Dave Wilson’s adaptation of Bloodshot, J Blakeson’s I Care A Lot, Adam Wingard’s Godzilla vs. Kong, Michael Bay’s Ambulance, and more. You can see González starring alongside Tobey Maguire, Marion Cotillard, and Forest Whitaker in the Apple TV+ anthology series Extrapolations. Soon, she’ll star in Netflix’s The Three-Body Problem, starring Benedict Wong, Tsai Chin, and more.
Luna and García Bernal will produce La Máquina through their La Corriente del Golfo studio, with Marco Ramirez executive producing, showrunning, and writing the limited series. Gabriel Ripstein directs, with Gerardo Gatica, Leandro Halperin, Adam Fishbach, and Kyzza Terrazas executive producing.
La Máquina strikes me as a hard-hitting boxing drama that will provide its stars with a great platform to strut their stuff. González is known for delivering nuanced performances, and I do not doubt that Irasema will showcase her complexity in new and exciting ways. I’ll be keeping my eye out for this one.
