But seeing it now, after all these years, I gotta say that the movie clicked for me like no film has clicked in a while. AWESOME acting across the board, starting and ending with both Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce’s amazing performances. It’s no wonder Russell became what he is today, but where the f*ck did Pearce go wrong?!? Hopefully, the good buzz on his upcoming movie MEMENTO, will put the bastard back on the map.
And what else did I like about this movie? Well, the story for one, the intrigue, the tension, the whole good cops/bad cops thing, the ladies of the night, the bribing, the inside blackmails, the locales, the score, the mood, the twists and turns, the friggin’ scene between Spacey and Cromwell, and back to the first point, which was…the story!
I could NEVER get into CHINATOWN, no matter how many times I’ve watched that movie. I just never “got it”. The story was just too confusing for me to give that much of a shit about (I finally got it the last time that I watched it, but it’s like…whatever!), and despite this film also leaving me in a little bit of the dark the first time around, EVERYTHING clicked this time around, as one clue led to another to another and yet another, and before you know it (keep in mind that you really have to pay attention to people’s NAMES in this film), the whole conspiracy makes a whole lot of sense and two coppers were getting ready to kick some mighty blue ass!!
Anyway, I won’t babble on any further only to say that I didn’t really think Basinger was “all that” in the film (although she was okay) but the movie as a whole is a classic, a definite keeper and one that worked better for me the second time around…MUCH BETTER!!
I dug it big-time, baby!!
