THE BIG SICK is based on the real-life unique courtship of Kumail Nanjiani and his now-wife, Emily V. Gordon. After his traditional Muslim family are unhappy with his relationship with Emily (Zoe Kazan) and seek to set up an arranged marriage, Kumail breaks things off with Emily. However, when he discovers that Emily has been stricken with a mysterious illness and falls into a coma, Kumail stays by her side and begins to get to know her parents, played by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano. The recently released trailer for the Michael Showalter directed film is surprisingly touching and quite funny, they even manage to throw in a reference to Kumail Nanjiani's love of The X-Files, and you should definitely check it out.
Our own Chris Bumbray caught THE BIG SICK when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and called it a "delightful film and a real crowd pleaser" in his review.
The official synopsis for THE BIG SICK:
Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, THE BIG SICK tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he’s never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart.
THE BIG SICK will see a limited-release on June 23, 2017, before opening wide on July 14, 2017.
