Kristen Stewart risks everything in trailer for Seberg

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

It absolutely baffles me that there are still people who see actress Kristen Stewart as nothing more than "that girl from the TWILIGHT films." Since leaving the franchise about sparkly vampires, the actress has mostly gone the indie route starring in films like CLOUDS OF SILS MARIA and CAFE SOCIETY. The woman has talent and anyone who says otherwise just isn't keeping up.

While Stewart is about to return to the big budget realm with director Elizabeth Banks' CHARLIE'S ANGELS (read JimmyO's review right here), the actress has another film on the horizon with Amazon's SEBERG. Stewart will portray actress Jean Seberg best known for starring in Jean-Luc Godard's 1960 film BREATHLESS. The role made her an iconic figure for French New Wave cinema. Seberg went on to become heavily involved in the civil rights movement and her support of the Black Panthers made her a target of  J. Edgar Hoover and the FBI Cointelpro project. In fact the FBI's constant harassment eventually led to Seberg's suicide in 1979.

Here's a brief synopsis of SEBERG:

Seberg is inspired by true events about the French New Wave darling and Breathless star, Jean Seberg (Kristen Stewart), who in the late 1960s was targeted by the FBI because of her support of the civil rights movement and romantic involvement with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), among others. In Benedict Andrews’ noir-ish thriller, Seberg’s life and career are destroyed by Hoover’s overreaching surveillance and harassment in an effort to suppress and discredit Seberg’s activism.

This seems like the perfect role for Kristen Stewart. Like Seberg, Stewart has tried to distance herself from the public's perception of her as an actress and has been an advocate for LGBTQ rights, just like Seberg was an advocate for civil rights. What's' interesting is that director Benedict Andrews film appears to not be just a straight drama but a compelling thriller as well. If I'm being honest, I don't know much about Jean Seberg beyond the basics, so this film could be an interesting insight into a specific portion of Seberg's life.

SEBERG starring Kristen Stewart, Anthony Mackie, Jack O'Connell, Margaret Qualley, Colm Meaney, Vince Vaughn, Stephen Root, and Zazie Beetz opens December 13.
