Much like her TWILIGHT co-star Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart has mostly steered clear of blockbuster work in recent years in favor of smaller indie films, winning critical acclaim in the process. But as comic book movie culture continues to dominate the industry every actor has to think about the possibility of donning a pair of spandex, and with that in mind, Stewart expressed that she’s down to take on a superhero role in the future – especially if it expands the representation of LGBTQ people in the genre.

Leading into the conversation, Variety talked about recent comments she made in Harper’s Bazaar in regards to her own sexuality, saying, “I have fully been told, ‘If you just like do yourself a favour, and don’t go out holding your girlfriend’s hand in public, you might get a Marvel movie.'”
“It’s nice to be able to talk about that in a way that people really understand now,” Stewart said to Variety while promoting her movie SEBERG at TIFF over the weekend. “Instead of sounding like I’m being crazy, like, ‘Don’t put me in a box! Ambiguity’s a cool thing!’ Now, it’s, like ‘duh.’ Before, I had to say it like it was some far-out idea. Now it’s more on the mainstage, which is rad.”
As far as what people perceived was a ding at Marvel Studios, Stewart clarified she was alluding to Marvel because “it was literally just a big conglomerate-y type thing.” Joking about it now, she said, “I’m sure they would love to hire the gay kids to be superheroes.”

As for getting a chance to play a superhero in a Marvel movie one day, her co-star and Marvel vet, Anthony Mackie (who plays Sam Wilson/Falcon in the MCU), was asked which hero he thought she could play. In taking a moment to think, Stewart jumped in with, “A gay one!” Marvel will be including their first gay superhero in next year's ETERNALS, though we aren't sure which character it is specifically.
Meanwhile, Pattinson has taken on the role of perhaps the most popular comic book hero of all time for the new Batman movie from Matt Reeves – and as always – there have been a few naysayers on the interwebs throwing fits over his casting. Stewart is in full support of his new Bat-gig, saying to Variety that he’s the perfect man for the job…if not also for his excellent cheekbones.
“I feel like he’s the only guy that could play that part. I’m so happy for him. It’s crazy. I’m very, very happy about that. I heard that and I was like, ‘Oh man!’ It’s awesome.”
When it comes to the idea of Stewart re-teaming with Pattinson for a Batman movie, she said, "I'm down. I’m definitely not turning that down.” Fans online have already been positing the idea of Stewart taking on the role of a character like Catwoman, so here's to the idea of her joining the movie as a cool as hell, sexually ambiguous Selina Kyle!
Stewart's SEBERG recently showed at the Venice Film Festival and TIFF and could see a theatrical release this year, and can be seen in CHARLIE'S ANGELS on November 15.
