Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has directly referenced Francis Ford Coppola's classic Vietnam War film APOCALYPSE NOW as being an influence on his 1970s-set KONG: SKULL ISLAND, and that influence has been made very obvious on the poster for SKULL ISLAND's IMAX 3D release, which is a replication of the APOCALYPSE NOW poster with some SKULL ISLAND tweaks – like putting Kong's face in place of Marlon Brando's.
Some are digging this poster as a fun homage, others are calling it out as a rip-off. I think it looks pretty cool myself.
Set in the same "MonsterVerse" as 2014's GODZILLA, KONG: SKULL ISLAND was written by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly. The story centers on
a diverse team of explorers who are brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific – as beautiful as it is treacherous – unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.
Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, John C. Reilly, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell, and Eugene Cordero star in the film, which is scheduled to reach theatres on March 10th.
