Knives Out: Rian Johnson addresses whether the Muppets could star in another chapter of the whodunit

Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is still making waves on the Netflix streaming chart, and fans of the whodunit franchise featuring Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc want to know what’s next for the character. Johnson has already made two films in the series, each starring an ensemble cast of A-list actors, now a question remains: Who can Johnson get for the third film that would blow everyone away? How about the Muppets? You heard me. What if Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the Great, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and other Muppets cast members joined Blanc for a murder mystery? It could be the best idea in cinema history, but Johnson doubts it’s the right move for the series.

An article by John DiLillo of Netflix Tudum is making the rounds, in which the writer talks about the Muppets starring in a new Knives Out mystery. In the write-up, DiLillo points out that the Muppets have appeared in a plethora of films across several genres throughout the years, from capers to pirate invasions to alien invasions and retellings of classic Christmas stories. In other words, Kermit and the gang can become involved with Benoit LeBlanc after someone takes the stuffing out of one of their fellow Muppets.

Responding to Tudum, Johnson says, “It’s a joke that I thought was pretty brilliant, and I ended up really giving [it] some serious thought,” Johnson tells Tudum. “As much as I take the murder mystery genre seriously, I take the genre of a Muppet movie seriously.”

As much as Johnson would love a chance to direct the Muppets in a proper film, he’s unsure if Benoit LeBlanc would pair well with the felt-covered icons of stage and screen. “I think those two things have very different rules,” he says. “You can either have a Benoit Blanc mystery that has Muppets in it, but they’ll feel out of place. Or you can have a Muppet movie that Benoit Blanc is in, but it’ll feel like a Muppet movie.”

When asked what he would call a Knives Out mystery starring the Muppets, Johnson refused to reveal the title, saying, “I can’t do that. What if I do it someday?”

Who would you choose if you could cast up to eight Muppets in a new Knives Out film? I would select Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Gonzo the Great, Pepe the King Prawn, Animal, Janis, Rowlf the Dog, and Fozzie Bear, with an absurd amount of cameos, of course.
