Killing It: zombie comedy coming from A Black Lady Sketch Show creator Robin Thede

A few months ago, HBO ordered a fourth season of A Black Lady Sketch Show, which was created by Robin Thede. Now Deadline reports that Thede is working on another project while preparing for the next season of A Black Lady Sketch Show: she has written a zombie horror comedy called Killing It, and Bridget Stokes will be directing the film for Amazon Studios.

That makes Killing It a continuation of the working relationship that Thede and Stokes established on the third season of A Black Lady Sketch Show, where Stokes directed all six episodes of the season and served as a co-executive producer of the show. And as a result of directing those episodes, she won the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, becoming the first Black woman to do so.

Killing It will show us what happens when four best friends attempt to redeem their college reputations by traveling to the SpelHouse homecoming. Their quest for vindication becomes a fight for survival when a zombie apocalypse begins to terrorize the country.

Thede is producing the film through her company For Better or Words, along with John Hodges, Brooke Posch, and Tony Hernandez of Jax Media.

In addition to season 3 of A Black Lady Sketch Show, Stokes has previously directed the 2011 romance Herman & Shelly, the 2019 comedy Boy Genius, and multiple episodes of the TV shows Gabby Duran & The Unsittables and Hello, Jack! The Kindness Show. She has plenty of comedy experience, so now Killing It will give her the chance to show how well she can handle horror elements.

Beyond A Black Lady Sketch Show, Thede’s writing credits include In the Flow with Affion Crockett, Real Husbands of Hollywood, and the talk shows The Queen Latifah Show, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, and The Rundown with Robin Thede – which, as you can tell from the title, she also hosted.

I’m honestly not familiar with any of Thede or Stokes’ previous works, but I’m always on board to watch a good zombie horror comedy, so I’m looking forward to seeing how Killing It turns out.
