Master thespian Kevin Spacey has been in the game for decades, and after all these years, earning countless honors and awards, the man still manages to surprise us at every turn. In the first trailer for ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD (via EW), the actor is completely unrecognizable as the once richest man in the world, J. Paul Getty. Spacey teams with Ridley Scott for the first time in this film about the 1973 kidnapping of his 16-year-old grandson, and how he toys with the idea of paying the ransom. Meanwhile, his daughter (Michelle Williams) teams up with an ex-CIA agent (Mark Wahlberg) to find her son before it’s too late.
Spacey had to sit in a makeup chair for five hours to transform into Getty, but that didn't stop him from finding the excitement in playing such a controversial figure:
One of the things I always enjoy trying to do in roles is allowing a character to behave, to do things, to say things in which an audience’s allegiances keep shifting, where even sometimes against your better nature you might like a character, you might root for a character,” he explains. “Ridley would come up to me and go, ‘Wow, that was really so different than I thought I would feel about this scene… I actually kind of like the guy.'” Spacey chuckles. “To me, that’s part of the challenge and part of the joy in being able to play a character as complicated as this man was.
The trailer does a great job of leading up to the reveal of Spacey as Getty, and no doubt he will turn in an excellent performance as the billionaire. Williams looks great too, and it’s nice to see Wahlberg doing something that doesn’t involve fighting giant robots. Ridley Scott didn’t win a ton of fans over with ALIEN: COVENANT this year, but ALL THE MONEY hopes to prove that he’s still one of the best to ever sit in the director’s chair.
ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD arrives on December 8.
